Beiya Yang, MFA

Beiya Yang likes to observe life, and she has brought this habit into her work by examining common objects and acts. As people rely so heavily upon the internet for access to endless information, they now prefer to use their phones for all communication. We may not realize that the world we live in is beginning to be covered by another language. This language is called coding--a series of numbers and letters that lack evidence of real emotion and meaning. This translation of words-to-code parallels the disconnect between people as they communicate virtually. Her work reminds people that through this form of communication, feelings are being forgotten as we immerse ourselves in our screens.

After finishing an undergraduate degree in Craft & Materials Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2019, she went on to continue her research in the MFA Metal Program at New Paltz. She will complete her graduate degree in Spring 2021.
